What to Expect on the Wandering Heart Apache Trail Tour

Wandering Heart Adventures’ Apache Trail day tour from Scottsdale or Phoenix collects you from your hotel at 9:30 AM, spends 80 minutes in Goldfield Ghost Town, drives the paved part of the Apache Trail to Canyon Lake and Tortilla Flat, and finishes at the Superstition Mountain Lost Dutchman Museum. It started from $200 per person when we checked on October 3, 2026.

The calendar shows which days still have space. The listing currently offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and you can reserve now and pay later.

Powerd by GetYourGuide

Canyon Lake is about 15 miles up State Route 88 from Apache Junction, and Tortilla Flat about 2 miles beyond it. The road is paved that far, but it is narrow and winding, with two one-lane bridges. A few miles past Tortilla Flat it becomes a dirt road. Without a car, the corridor is hard to do on your own, because the ghost town, the museum and the lake are spread along about 15 miles of highway.

That is where a van tour helps. The listing puts the 90-minute steamboat ride on Canyon Lake at the center of the day.

We haven’t taken this tour. For this page we checked the live listing, the operator’s own descriptions on other booking sites, the Dolly Steamboat’s notices, and reviews of the other GetYourGuide tours that run the same Goldfield, Canyon Lake and Tortilla Flat day, paying particular attention to what people said about lunch, the heat and how long each stop lasts.

There are four things worth knowing before you book:

  • The Dolly Steamboat cruise is paused from August 30, 2026, and its operator expects to restart at the beginning of January 2027.
  • Lunch and the guide’s tip are extra, even though the listing’s Includes list names both.
  • The listing is new on GetYourGuide and has no reviews there yet.
  • Pickup is at 9:30 AM, so in summer the outdoor stops fall in the hottest part of the day.

The rest of the format has a good record. On the other GetYourGuide listings that run this same day, close to nine in ten reviews give five stars, and the guides and the boat ride get most of the praise.

Is the Dolly Steamboat Running?

Not until about January 2027. What you get for the $200 depends mostly on when you travel: before then, there is no cruise.

Salt River Project is lowering Canyon Lake by about 54 feet for roughly 16 weeks from September 16, 2026, for dam safety inspections, and Tonto National Forest has closed the lake, its ramps and the marina. The Dolly Steamboat says it “will temporarily suspend operations starting August 30th” and plans to welcome passengers back “at the beginning of January 2027”. Our Canyon Lake visitor guide has the full timeline.

The GetYourGuide listing still describes the 90-minute ride and still shows the same $200 price. It doesn’t say what happens on the day during the closure. On its own site the Dolly sells its 90-minute Scenic Nature Cruise for $35, so the cruise is a modest part of the price, but it is the first highlight on the listing.

The Goldfield stop, the drive, Tortilla Flat and the museum are not affected. The paved road to Tortilla Flat stays open throughout.

This Tour, a Saguaro Lake Cruise or a Bigger Track Record?

There are two alternatives, and each solves a different part of the problem.

  • Arizona Scenic Tours’ Apache Trail tour now takes its cruise on Saguaro Lake, which is outside the Canyon Lake drawdown, after a stop in the Superstition Mountains and Goldfield Ghost Town. It is a 9-hour day for up to 5 people, rated 4.9/5 from 27 reviews, from $215. The listing’s title still says “Canyon Lake Cruise”, and its booking notes say the lake cruise tickets are bought separately after booking and are non-refundable.
  • Detours of Arizona’s small-group Apache Trail day tour on Viator covers Goldfield, Tortilla Flat and a 1.5-hour nature cruise in a van of up to 13, rated 4.7/5 from more than 270 reviews, from $174. Food and the tip are extra. Its cruise is on Canyon Lake, so it is affected by the same closure.

The Saguaro Lake tour makes more sense if you are traveling this fall and a boat ride matters to you. The Detours tour suits you better after January if you would rather book a day with a long review history than a listing with none yet.

Across Arizona Tours also runs a history-focused Apache Trail van tour with no lake in it at all, built around the Goldfield mine tour, the narrow-gauge train and the Superstition Mountain Museum, from $169 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. It is also a new listing with no reviews yet, so we haven’t linked it here. The operator’s earlier steamboat day trip on GetYourGuide, now withdrawn, averaged 4.9 from more than 60 reviews.

Tips for Booking the Wandering Heart Apache Trail Day Tour

  • Ask the operator what replaces the cruise if you travel before January 2027. Get the answer in writing, and ask whether the price stays at $200 without the boat ride.
  • Budget for lunch and a tip for your guide. The listing’s Know before you go block says “Lunch is not included” and “Gratuities are not included”, which matches the operator’s description of finding “a good spot to enjoy local novelties and lunch” at Tortilla Flat.
  • Confirm your pickup address at checkout. Pickup runs from any address inside the highlighted area of Phoenix and Scottsdale, and the van comes to you at 9:30 AM.
  • Pack a hat, sunglasses and a jacket. All three are on the listing’s what-to-bring list. Winter mornings are cool, and summer afternoons at the outdoor stops are well above 100°F.
  • Book between October and April if your dates are flexible. Our month-by-month guide to the Apache Trail has the temperatures and a live check for your travel date.

How the Wandering Heart Apache Trail Day Runs

Pickup is at 9:30 AM and the listing gives the return as around 5 PM, so allow about seven and a half hours door to door, slightly longer than the listed 7.

Only two stops have published times: 80 minutes in Goldfield and the 90-minute cruise. That is 2 hours 50 minutes. The other four and a half hours or so cover pickups, the drive out and back, lunch at Tortilla Flat and the museum. The listing doesn’t say how long each of those lasts.

A licensed guide drives and narrates from the front of an SUV or van. Groups are capped at 12. The order on the listing is Goldfield first, then the drive up to Canyon Lake, then Tortilla Flat for lunch, then the museum on the way back.

Stop 1: Goldfield Ghost Town

Goldfield is a rebuilt 1890s mining town at the foot of the Superstition Mountains, about 4 miles up the Apache Trail. Entry to the town is free. The narrow-gauge train, the mine tour and gold panning are paid extras, and the listing doesn’t say they are included, so bring a card if you want to do one of them.

Eighty minutes is enough to walk the main street and look into the shops, with time for one of the extras. Our Arizona ghost town guide lists what each attraction costs.

Stop 2: The Drive to Canyon Lake

From Goldfield the road climbs past Lost Dutchman State Park and into the Superstitions, with views of Weaver’s Needle and the canyon country above the Salt River. Your guide narrates the history of the trail and the Lost Dutchman legend on the way.

The tour stays on the paved section. When monsoon storms closed SR 88 for about a week in July 2026, the closure began beyond Tortilla Flat, so a short road closure on the unpaved part usually doesn’t affect this route. Our road conditions guide covers how to check.

Stop 3: The Dolly Steamboat on Canyon Lake

When it runs, the Dolly is a sternwheeler that loops through the canyon arms of the lake for 90 minutes while the captain narrates. On the other listings that include it, the cruise is one of the most praised parts of the day. Reviewers describe it as relaxing, and several mention seeing bald eagles and bighorn sheep on the cliffs.

From August 30, 2026 to about January 2027, the cruise isn’t running.

Stop 4: Tortilla Flat

Tortilla Flat is a former stagecoach stop with a restaurant, a saloon with saddle bar stools, a general store and an ice cream counter. Lunch is here, at your own cost. Reviews of the same stop on other tours mention the prickly pear lemonade and ice cream.

A few reviewers on similar tours felt the stops, lunch in particular, ran long, while one wanted more time at the museum. If the museum matters more to you, say so to the guide at pickup.

Stop 5: The Superstition Mountain Lost Dutchman Museum

The museum sits on the Apache Trail outside Apache Junction and covers the mining history of the range, the Lost Dutchman story and the area’s film sets. Admission is included in the price. It is the last stop before the drive back to your hotel, so if the day has run late, this is the visit most likely to feel short.

Other Phoenix Day Trips

If you have another day around Phoenix, you could float the Salt River by kayak, ride a Jeep or UTV into the Tonto National Forest, or go further afield to Sedona or the Grand Canyon.

Other Practical Things to Know

  • The tour is not wheelchair accessible, according to another booking site that sells the same day.
  • Most of the stops are outdoors, so carry water between them from May to September.

Is the Wandering Heart Apache Trail Day Tour Worth It?

Yes, if you are traveling from January 2027 on and want Goldfield, Canyon Lake, Tortilla Flat and the museum in one day without driving. The $200 price covers hotel pickup, the guide, the cruise and museum admission. Lunch and the tip come on top.

Before January, the cruise at the top of the listing’s highlights isn’t running. If a boat ride matters to you this fall, the Saguaro Lake tour is the one to look at. If you would rather book a listing with years of reviews behind it, the Detours of Arizona day on Viator has more than 270.

If you do book, keep the confirmation email handy on the day, since it has the operator’s contact details for the pickup.

How We Put This Together

Nobody on our team has taken this tour. This page is based on the GetYourGuide listing as it stood on October 3, 2026, the operator’s descriptions of the same day on other booking sites, the Dolly Steamboat’s own closure notice, Salt River Project’s drawdown announcement, ADOT news about SR 88, and about 110 reviews of three other GetYourGuide listings that run the same stops, read in English and German. On those listings, reviews are used only for the stops themselves, not for any operator’s logistics.

When we checked on August 28, 2026, this listing showed 4.8 from 72 reviews. On October 3, 2026, GetYourGuide showed it as a new activity with no reviews. Prices and availability change with season and demand. We earn a commission if you book through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Dolly Steamboat cruise included right now?

Not until about January 2027. The Dolly Steamboat suspended operations on August 30, 2026, while Canyon Lake is lowered for dam safety work, and expects to resume at the beginning of January 2027. The listing hasn't changed, so ask the operator what replaces the cruise on your date before you pay.

Is lunch included on the Apache Trail day tour?

No. The listing's Includes list names lunch and gratuities, but its Know before you go block says "Lunch is not included" and "Gratuities are not included". Plan to pay for lunch at Tortilla Flat and to tip your guide.

How long is the tour?

The listing says 7 hours. Pickup is at 9:30 AM and the return is around 5 PM, so allow about seven and a half hours door to door.

How big are the groups?

The listing caps the group at 12 participants, in an SUV or van.

Why does the tour have no reviews?

GetYourGuide shows it as a new activity. On August 28, 2026, the same listing showed 4.8 from 72 reviews, but on October 3, 2026, it showed none.

Is the Apache Trail tour worth it?

From January 2027, yes, if you want Goldfield, Canyon Lake, Tortilla Flat and the museum in one day without driving. Until the Dolly Steamboat restarts, a tour with its cruise on Saguaro Lake is the better choice if a boat ride matters to you.
